Custom Boxes — Trends & Tips for 2026

Packaging trends move slower than fashion, but they move. Here's what US brands are actually picking for their custom box runs in 2026, based on the orders we're printing.

1. Soft-touch lamination is the new gloss

Gloss laminate used to be the default "premium" choice. In 2026, soft-touch (matte rubberized feel) has won — it photographs better, holds up to handling without showing fingerprints, and instantly reads as $$$. We're laminating about 60% of our cosmetics and gift boxes with soft-touch this year, up from 25% in 2022.

2. Minimal kraft for "natural" and "clean" brands

Indie skincare, soap, candles, and food brands are all gravitating toward uncoated natural kraft with a single-color logo print — usually black or a brand-specific spot color. The look reads as "eco" / "artisan" / "small batch" without saying any of those things. Pairs especially well with one-color foil accent if you want a step up.

3. Foil accents (not full foil)

Full foil-covered boxes peaked in 2019. The current move is selective foil — just the logo, just one word, just the brand mark. The contrast against an otherwise restrained design is what does the work.

4. QR-code unboxing flows

This one is new. Brands are printing QR codes on the inside of the lid that link to a product registration page, an unboxing video, a how-to-use page, or a "thank you" video from the founder. The conversion rate from QR scan to email signup is surprisingly high — we've heard 40%+ for brands that lead with founder-authentic content.

5. Eco-grade rigid (recyclable luxury)

Customers who buy premium products increasingly want to feel good about disposing of the packaging. We're getting more requests for chipboard cores (recyclable) wrapped in FSC-certified paper, with water-based inks and no plastic film — premium look, fully recyclable. Brands like Verve Coffee and Susanne Kaufmann are doing this well.

6. Inner surprise (printed inside)

Printing the inside of the box — a pattern, a "thank you", a brand story, or just a contrasting color — costs a tiny premium and dramatically improves the unboxing photo. It's the cheapest meaningful upgrade you can make to an existing packaging design.

Custom Box Printing produces all of the above for US brands — short runs from 100 units, free design support, free US shipping. Request a free quote or design your box in 3D.
